The Fantastical Case of Sugary Sweet Melancholia Servings

post valentine’s day movie marathon

or the Movies You Need To See So We Could Socialize.

It’s what we’ve been looking forward to after every single exam week. We kids (mostly the BFF and I) love watching movies than going out at night, something one friend observed as “gay.” I beg to disagree. Gays like going out. I’m just domesticated. Besides, girls should never have their names follow the words slut, drunken and dancing on the morning-after chats in school.
Se7en. Brad Pitt as the young, giddy detective, Morgan Freeman as the wise, older one, and Kevin Spacey… ah, Kevin Spacey. Freaky to the core. I love that one scene where he walks in the police station, blood staining his hands and shirt. “Officer,” he calls gently. No one notices. “Officer… OOOOFIIIICEEEERRRR!!!!” image from adinkins

Inglourious Basterds. Yay, Brad Pitt and his gang scalping Nazis! A similarly freaky Nazi villain, Christoph Waltz as Col. Hans Landa! With sardonic humor sprinkled about, Inglourious Basterds is a lovely boys night out date movie. Okay, that sounded gay.
Love and Other Drugs. I mentally checked Love and Other Drugs as a “will watch” since the trailer I saw in the movie house proved charming enough. Two months later, after a case presentation, someone reported the boys from my class  having “sexy times.” Apparently, they were seeing Love on LCD projector in an empty room. Much later, I would find out Anne Hathaway had provided several glorious takeaways for the big boys. Let’s not forget Jake’s backside and abs for the girls. Aside from the side dish, Love is, well, the same ‘ol love story. Anne’s character, Maggie has Parkinson disease. Jake, the pharmaceutical salesman Jamie, falls in love with her. Then realizes what he’s gotten himself into. But ultimately, he accepts his feelings for Maggie and her disease. It’s a happy ending.
Megamind and Shrek Forever After. Megamind is charming. We have a blue villain trying to be a villain, a curvy reporter, and Metroman who bears a striking character resemblance to Superman minus the Kyrptonite thingy. The love story dimension actually works. Shrek Forever After is, I daresay, funnier than the last two. The first Shrek was a riot, the second one Ha-ha, the third, oh well… Forever After isn’t as ROFL, but it had me laughing out loud in some scenes, especially in those with Puss. I’m biased, I love the kitty. I can’t wait for the spin-off movie.
The Fight Club. Yay! Another Brad Pitt movie! Here, Edward Norton is an office guy who, together with Brad Pitt, builds a global organization to vent male aggression (sorry, that line’s from IMDB). Funny, violent, and thought provoking. I never thought I’d use those words together.
